Description
Located in the middle of Tokyo, Japan’s busiest city, Zojoji Temple represents Jodo Shu on the eastern side of Japan, which is a center of both religious and cultural activities.
Zojoji Temple prospered from the 17th to 19th centuries as the family temple of Shogun Tokugawa, who had long governed Japan. Like Chion-in Temple in Kyoto, there are many important treasures, old writings, and historical monuments housed at Zojoji Temple, including magnificent old architecture like the three gates.
There is a huge, famous pine tree located on the temple grounds known as “Grant’s Pine Tree,” a gift from the 18th President of the United States, who planted the tree while visiting the temple.
Among the cultural events that take place at Zojoji are Takigi-noh (a Noh play using fire light) and musical events. Zojoji has a training hall for Jodo Shu priests, as well as a place for community events for all people.
